Web filtering is usually sold as a way to stop people wasting time online. That is the least interesting thing it does. Its real value is blocking the sites that deliver malware and host phishing pages, before anyone on your network reaches them.
What we provide
- Category-based blocking, set per department rather than one blunt rule for the whole company
- Known malicious and phishing domains blocked automatically, updated continuously
- Reporting on what is actually being used, including which services are consuming your connection
- Policies that follow laptops off the premises, not just while they are on the office network
- Exceptions handled sensibly, because the marketing team genuinely does need social media
Setting it at the right level
Filtering that is too strict creates a worse problem than the one it solves: staff start working around it, using personal devices and unmanaged services, and you lose sight of what is happening entirely.
We would rather block the categories that carry real risk, leave the rest open, and give you the reporting to make an informed decision about anything in between. What gets blocked is your call, not a default somebody else chose.
What it will not do
Filtering works on categories and known bad domains. A brand-new phishing site registered this morning may not be categorised yet, which is why this runs alongside spam filtering and endpoint protection rather than instead of them.
It is one layer in the wider firewall and network security work described on our IT security page.
Part of our IT security service. This sits alongside the rest of what we look after, and most clients take it as part of a wider agreement rather than on its own. See the full service.
